Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Madrid Open with Hip Injury
Concern Grows Over Wrist Damage After Epic Defeat
Sinner Admits Uncertainty About Severity
World number two Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Madrid Open on Wednesday due to a hip injury, handing a walkover into the semi-finals to last year's runner-up Alexander Zverev.
Sinner, who had battled through an epic three-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round, admitted that he was unsure how badly his wrist had been affected by a nasty fall during that match.
"I don't know yet how much damage has been done," Sinner said in a statement released by the tournament organizers. "I'm going to have to get it checked out and see what the extent of the injury is."
Sinner's withdrawal is a major blow to the Madrid Open, which is already missing Rafael Nadal, who withdrew with a foot injury.
With Sinner and Nadal out, Alcaraz is now the clear favorite to win the title in Madrid.
